Highland Dental - Root Canal Experts

Do you have tooth pain? Have you noticed that one of your teeth is very sensitive or discolored? These symptoms can be signs of severe tooth decay, and they need to be addressed right away.

At Highland Dental, Dr. Mark Brooks has decades of experience detecting and treating tooth decay using various treatments, including root canal therapy.

Root Canal Therapy Myth Busting!

The name is familiar to most patients, even if they have never had one. Root canals have been portrayed in TV and film as being the most unpleasant experience a person can have. However, that is absolutely not true! With current technology and advanced treatment techniques, a root canal is usually no more unpleasant than getting a filling.

Root Canal Therapy is a highly useful restorative treatment that can save your tooth if it is severely decayed, damaged or infected.

  • Did you know… Root canals are the tiny passageways that branch off from beneath the top of the tooth and run downward until they reach the tip of the tooth root. All teeth have between one and four root canals.

Why Root Canal Therapy?

If left untreated, tooth decay can cause an infection that reaches the pulp (the inner chamber of the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and other tissues), which will eventually spread to the tooth root. A traumatic injury to a tooth can also compromise the pulp, leading to similar problems.

When your inner tooth becomes diseased, it brings a host of problems, including pain and sensitivity. If the infection continues to worsen small pockets of pus will develop inside the tooth, which can lead to an abscess — often very painful for the patient.

At this point, the only way to stop the infection and save the tooth is to see Dr. Mark Brooks for root canal therapy.

  • Root canal therapy is a remarkable treatment designed to save a problem tooth. Before the procedure was developed and gained acceptance, the only alternative for treating a diseased tooth was extraction. Therefore, root canal therapy is an important advancement in dental treatment.

What to Expect

A basic root canal procedure takes about 90 minutes. Teeth with more than one canal or teeth that are severely infected may require up to three visits.

  • Step 1: Dr. Brooks drills an opening in the top of the tooth to expose the pulp. This step in root canal therapy is very similar to getting a filling.
  • Step 2: Dr. Brooks removes the pulp from the inside of the root canal or canals.
  • Step 3: The space left after removing the pulp is carefully cleaned and widened so that there is room for a filling. Dr. Brooks irrigates the area to make sure there is no pulp left, and then he makes sure it is completely dry before moving on to the next step.
  • Step 4: Dr. Brooks treats the area he has just cleaned out with an antibiotic medication to prevent infection. Depending how infected the tooth is, he may leave it open to drain for a day or two, which means you will need to come back a second time to finish the procedure.
  • Step 5: If the tooth does not need to drain, Dr. Brooks fills the root canals with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material that seals to the tooth to prevent infection.
  • Step 6: Dr. Brooks fills the tooth with tooth-colored composite to reinforce it and prevent future infection. In cases of severe infection or decay, he may need to place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it until a permanent crown can be placed.

The vast majority of patients who undergo root canal therapy experience very little discomfort. In fact, the treatment is normally less painful than leaving the infection untreated. The biggest benefit of root canal therapy is that your tooth is fully restored and you can eat, drink, and smile again without pain!
